MARITIME MATTERS -
May Bank Holiday Weekend

Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the World, the lighthouse marks the entrance to Waterford Harbour and has been a beacon to sailors for 800 years.

The Visitor Centre at Hook has been open for eight years and attracts approximately 50,000 Visitors per year, it is the main visitor attraction in South West Wexford. Located on the tip of Hook Peninsula the area is no stranger to tragedies of a seafaring nature.

The first 'Maritime Matters' festival took place on the 5th May '07 and was a great success largely because of the support of the Irish Coast Guard and all the rescue services. The intention is to start the Holiday season with a message of safety and respect for the sea. We intend to continue to build this weekend as a Hook Peninsula sea festival.

The Motto of the Commissioners of Irish Lights is 'For the Safety of All' and we hope to use this theme in the 2010 festival.
